It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Israel
Museum in Jerusalem.
Whether you know us from earlier visits or have reached
us now by chance, I hope you will enjoy this opportunity
to experience our exhibitions, collections, and programs,
and to find out more about us.
Our Museum was founded in 1965 and has, in a remarkably
short period of time, become the encyclopedic museum
of art and archeology for our part of the world. We
hope that our web-site reflects some sense of the scope
and quality of our collections and exhibitions and also
the beauty of our campus and the range of activities
which take place here every day. |
|
| What distinguishes your visit to our web-site
from the experience of a traditional museum visit is the opportunity
which it offers for interaction between you, our electronic
visitor, and us. While you travel at your own pace through
the Museum's galleries, the Shrine of the Book, and the Sculpture
Garden, we look forward to your comments and to your responses
to what you see - through our guest book, our virtual shop,
our membership page, and our interactive education programs.
We are delighted by the growing number of friends of the
Israel Museum who have become 'virtual' visitors to our web-site.
However, when our 'virtual' friends become real visitors to
us in Jerusalem, we know that our web-site has served its
true purpose.
On behalf of our Board and staff, I am pleased to welcome
you to the Museum for this electronic visit and also to invite
you to visit us in person, through our 'non-virtual' door,
where I am sure you will discover for yourself that there
is no substitute for experiencing cultural treasures in the
original: in our case, nearly 500,000 objects of fine art,
archaeology, ethnography and Judaica, representing the history
of world culture from nearly one million years ago to today.
