The Shrine of the Book was erected in 1965 for the preservation and
exhibition of the Dead Sea Scrolls. As the fragility of the scrolls
makes it impossible to display them on a continuous basis, a system
of scroll rotation has recently been developed. After a scroll has
been exhibited for 3-6 months, it is removed from its showcase and
placed temporarily in a special storeroom, where it is given a "rest"
from exposure. Scrolls that had been removed from exhibition are replaced
by other authentic scroll fragments.
